make it pretty: quiet place

logo, photography and styling by Corrin Acome

tip: Grab a pretty pebble from each beach or calming place you've visited. Display them in holders with lots of compartments (vintage knobs, egg holders, etc.) to remind yourself to relax and stay calm.

You'll notice I don't have a contribution for these next few challenges. This is because I'm an idiot and corrupted my CompactFlash card for my camera and have to buy a new one.

Moral of the story: It is no urban myth CompactFlash cards can become corrupt by not properly ejecting them from your computer. The warning is true and you should listen to it very carefully.

make it pretty: celebration

tip: I think a celebration can be found in anything that has positive energy. Whether it's by wrapping paper masks around some ordinary vases or framing snapshots of your travels and fondest memories, make sure to surround yourself with things that make you smile.

tip: I can't believe I'm saying this but ... embrace "white space". Not every single corner of every single space needs to be occupied. This draws the eye in toward the subject and creates a natural landscape that makes compositions so interesting.

make it pretty: furry friends

logo, photography and styling by Corrin Acome. Modeling by Lola.

tip: I personally love the way Lola blends into the background. The photo looks really crisp and clean with the focus on her face and expression. I mean, she is the absolute cutest.

For mine, I tried to create a landscape with still objects. I worked with the horizontal stripes, using the toys to extend the line from one side of the photo to the other.

tip: Follow the rule of threes. Anytime your displaying items, try clustering in three. It will fill the space without seeming too formal or cluttered.

Want to follow along? Start from the beginning.

tip: You can make even the most mundane, boring things can look pretty with a little TLC. Take a second look at that stack of plates, glass full of water or even takeout box and figure out a way to make it shine.

make it pretty: light

tip: Be cognizant of what your light will be shining off of. Brighten up a space with white canvases and metallic paint. Or add depth and movement to a space with plants. Mix textures to see what kind of shadows light will cast to finish the look.

tip: Use light to make your subject pop. Figure out where your focal point is and play with the light being in front of or behind your subject. You'll be surprised on the different tones that come out.

make it pretty: stack or pile

logo, photos and styling by Corrin Acome

tip: Find consistency in your composition. Repetitive objects allows the eye to register and the stacks offer weight and substance.

tip: Play with proportions. Once you get an idea, see what it looks like spread out, close together, at an angle, etc. You may go in with an idea of it looking one way and come out with it looking completely different.
